The goal of the Zonta International Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Program is to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing a commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the advancement of the status of women.

As the District 10 YWPA Chairman, I want to share with you new and updated information on the 2010 YWPA Awards. It's definitely not too early to be thinking about YWPA.  It is time to start getting your committee in place and planning your strategy for being the next club in District 10 to select a winner who can go on to receive the District award or even an International award.  In 2009 there were again eight clubs who submitted applications.  I would really like to see this number increase in 2010!

If your club does not have a YWPA Committee, please consider forming one.  Your club will find it very rewarding to be able to assist a young woman (age 16 to 20) in your community to reach her educational goals and spread the word of Zonta as well.  Should your club want to consider becoming involved in the YWPA Program this year, please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to work with the new committee.  Additionally, lots of good information is on the Zonta International website, www.zonta.org  and on the District 10 website by clicking on Scholarship.

So that your committee can begin working on YWPA, links have been posted at top left of this page for your convenience:

There is a very comprehensive section on the YWPA program on the Zonta International website.  Also, on the website is a great poster you can download to use in promoting the program and to place in schools to announce the award.  The 2010 Selection Criteria is not posted as yet but should be coming soon.  You must log in as a member to access the program materials.  One other important item as stated in the Guidelines, "Clubs must provide Zonta International  Headquarters with a Club email and/or website address to include on the Zonta International  website Club Locator.  The Club Locator enables potential applicants to find their local Club and to contact a club representative to request applications."

Now most importantly, below are the deadlines relative to the 2010 YWPA Awards:

April 1, 2010 - I must receive your Club's 2010 application by this date. You can send your applications to           YWPAchair@zontadistrict10.org or if you prefer to send them regular mail, just send an email to this address and I will provide you with a physical mailing address.

May 1, 2010 - District Recipients selected and applications received by International

July 1, 2010 - Announcement of District and International Recipients

So, as you can see, it is time to begin working on YWPA.  Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, etc.  I am here to help and look forward to working with your Club again in 2010.
