From Maggie Warren, Governor of District 10

The following is a status report on the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Disaster Relief Project.

Zonta International and District 10 have a prominent place in the disaster relief efforts, due in part to the care, concern and generosity of our Zonta sisters around the world, but also due to Past Governor Carol Rainey's efforts. (Carol is now a member of District 9).   Carol put out a call to her fellow Weekenders clothing line representatives which has resulted in hundreds of cartons of new and nearly new samples and other clothing and supplies.

These people have further increased the circle of donors by incorporating our "Zonta message" into their networks.  We are now receiving from other organizations like Soroptomist, as well as clothing and lingerie manufacturers.   Zonta has become an often repeated word right here in North America.

The donors are from Alaska, Canada, New York, Florida, California and all points in between.

The Zonta Club of Lafayette is facilitating the sorting and distribution of this effort.  We are enjoying seeing all the packages arriving addressed to "Zonta District 10 - Hurricane Relief".

Each donor receives an information letter and receipt, both which contain information about Zonta International and include all the website addresses.

I have personally received hundreds of emails and phone calls, some of which specifically ask about Zonta and its activities.  Zonta is being praised for our efforts in helping women, who are the central force of most families in southern Louisiana.

We have expanded our distribution east to Gulfport, Mississippi and west to Lake Charles, Louisiana.  Our New Orleans Zontians and their families have received care packages.

Club members throughout District 10 have opened their homes and their hearts.  Several have taken families into their homes, especially the elder ones who need care.

Our District 10 foundation has benefited from the generosity of many.  A special committee has been formed who will review grant applications and make their recommendations to the district 10 foundation board.

The reconstruction and re-settlement of New Orleans, its surrounding suburbs, Lake Charles and the areas south and west, will take an enormous amount of faith, energy, money and time.  While most people respond immediately with monetary donations for relief assistance and we are to be grateful for that, what we must remember is that any commitment to this disaster relief effort should be a long term one.

The immediate needs of shelter, food, clothing and medical care are being filled, but the holidays are just around the corner.  Even with all the government assistance available, I suspect that many children will not have fun Halloweens, bountiful Thanksgivings or very merry Christmases.  Most of the mothers in the matriarchal society of the south are sole providers and we must rally around them so that they can keep their families whole.

These children will need an ongoing supply of school items, including clothing, shoes and computers.  Those returning to their home towns may be without libraries.  Their mothers will need nurturing and emotional support, and opportunities for jobs.  Their fathers need to know that they are not alone in their efforts to rebuild their homes, lives, jobs and businesses.  We cannot forget them, even though time is passing.

The support of our sister Zontians, friends and families is powerful and we can, and will, be effective in Zonta's effort to improve the status of women in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama who have been affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Our Zonta International District 10 Foundation, a 501(c) (3) IRS approved entity, is ready to accept your donations for relief for all the citizens in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A special committee has been appointed to review the requests for financial assistance following established guidelines. This committee will make their recommendations to the Zonta International District 10 Foundation Board who will approve the payments before they are issued. An accounting of the activities of this special Disaster Relief Account will be made available as requested.

All checks should be made payable to Zonta District 10 Foundation, with a notation of "Disaster Relief" and may be mailed to District 10 Treasurer Sharon Graves, SL 50 Lake Cherokee, Henderson, TX  75652. Following are the wire instructions:

News from District 10 Clubs and "Down Under"

From the Zonta Club of Weatherford

We have only about 300 evacuees here in Weatherford at this time, but we are enrolling a few children every week.  Donna Allen is the school district's liaison and has been working herself to death.  We currently have 43 children from Pre-K through high school that are evacuees.  We have been concentrating on getting the families into housing that were brought into the campground.  Tomorrow our adult ed program will have a booth at a resource and health fair and the families will be able to visit with potential employers, schools, counselors, health agencies that may be able to address specific needs, etc.  We know some of them need adult education and we will be trying to reach those.  We have had some inquiries on classes but maybe this will give us specifics on where the classes need to be held, etc.  Until we know their needs we can only guess how we can help.

From the Zonta Club of Austin

I have been helping nearly every day either at the Austin Convention Center, American Red Cross doing case management, elderly case management, housing, etc. Also doing the 8 to 1 pm case management and 4 pm to midnight at the convention center. I have not asked to take pictures. Have assisted from very young to elderly. It has been a great experience to work with such appreciative people that have either lost all or partly. Margarine G. Beaman, Austin

From the Zonta Club of Houston

We have decided not to do any specific project as a club at this time - we know that the groups that we normally support are helping and have significant extras burden supporting evacuees and that they will need special efforts from us in the future when time and $'s drop off. A number of members have volunteered in their area/neighborhood evacuee shelters or at the main sites. Many have contributed $'s.  Club members have met Shalome Jenkins (from New Orleans) and are providing some money and clothing/personal items for her and family. I have emailed Rebecca Altobelli (from New Orleans) at Chevron but not heard back yet. Does anyone have a phone number?  We hope to get both to our meeting next week.

From the Zonta Club of Longview

Our club has not jumped on the band wagon yet, but our convention center is hosting several hundred families, and our Vice President Renee Hawkins, who is Director of the Longview Museum of Fine Art, hosted a party for the children at MCAC and they had snacks, games and arts and crafts.  There may be something on their website (which Judy Johnston does) - www.LMFA.org, or there may be articles on the local newspaper website, www.news-journal.com.  A number of churches and service organizations are volunteering with the evacuees.

From the Zonta Club of Corpus Christi

The Zonta Club of Corpus Christi has provided clothes, toiletries and pet food directly to residents of New Orleans within 4 days of hurricane.  We continue to provide canned goods, water and other assistance to workers of the Valero and Mobil refineries. We consider this a project to be continued as long as need exists.  Some of our members have also visited and assisted in the shelters and nursing home for evacuees in Corpus Christi.

From the Zonta Club of Lafayette

Our members have assisted with and loaned beds and other furniture for evacuees through Holy Cross Catholic Church; donated clothing, funds and linens to Goodwill, Holy Cross Catholic Church and St. Edmond's Church; donated books and visited with evacuees at area hotels; volunteered at the CajunDome Evacuee Center; cooked and served food to evacuees at hotels; received, sorted and distributed clothing, food, supplies and personal items to area evacuees from the New Orleans area, Gulfport, Mississippi, Abbeville, Erath, Cameron, Lake Charles, Louisiana and Port Arthur, Texas.

We have received gift cards for school supplies that have been distributed directly to school counselors.

We have also received 1500 pounds of bras and over 500 pounds of new ladies lingerie that is being distributed on a daily basis.

And, we have helped to place musical instruments that were donated by a musician from the West Coast.

From District 24 Governor Ros Kinder: ("Down Under") in Australia

 Hi Maggie

Thought you would be interested in this - it was sent to me from a Zontian living in Canberra - not sure where she picked it up from - but you have made the stories "down under".

I do hope that things are settling down over there - the hurricane is still on the news here most nights - it is so hard to believe some of the stories and the slowness of the authorities to respond - mind you I am not sure how our authorities would react in such a situation.

I haven't checked the updates on your website in recent days but again hope that our Zontian sisters over there can rebuild their lives fairly speedily and it is not too heartbreaking when they are allowed to return to their homes.

Best wishes and thinking of you

Ros

Subject: Another Zonta story about  Katrina

PLEASANTON - Carol DiSalvi's heart went out to the people suffering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. Just like most, she was concerned about the lack of food, shelter and water for the hundreds of thousands of people affected.

Knowing that man, and woman, does not live by bread alone, DiSalvi felt bad about something else, too. "I was watching these poor ladies, and they didn't have anything," said DiSalvi. "I thought, if someone handed these women a used bra, they'd have to take it. They don't have anything else. I just thought that was sad. That's an intimate item."

DiSalvi realized she could provide a personal touch to what, for many, has become a large-scale, mass-quantity relief effort. As owner of Lily Ann's in downtown Pleasanton, DeSalvi had a fair amount of overstock and "for sale" items she knew she could part with. By the end of it all, she had packaged up a 45-pound box with more than $11,000 worth of lingerie in it. It was ready Friday to be mailed to a Louisiana-based relief provider.  "There's everything in there -- bras, panties, thongs, sleepwear, everything," DiSalvi said. "When I watched television, I noticed a lot of the ladies appeared to be large-busted ladies. We specialize in large-busted women, so it was perfect."

DiSalvi didn't stop there. She also reached out to her network of other lingerie retailers, manufacturers and suppliers to send anything they could. DiSalvi said so far she has received more than 60 e-mails from others in the industry saying they're going to do the same.

"It's a phenomenal thing," said Maggie Warren, governor of the Lafayette, La., district of Zonta, a nonprofit group for women that is receiving and distributing DiSalvi's shipment. "I can't imagine the Red Cross would even accept it, but it's really going to help a lot of people."

DiSalvi, in fact, did call the Salvation Army and Goodwill, but neither group was willing to take her offerings. That's when a client suggested the Zonta group, and DiSalvi contacted Warren.

Warren said that over the past week Zonta had received some undergarments from stores in Florida and New York. "I just didn't want to think of the feeling of waking up in the morning and having to put on an old bra," said DiSalvi, whose box included more than 100 bras in sizes from 32A to 50I. "I'm just happy we got such a wonderful response back and were able to do something."

Mary Frances Gardner sent the follow email : I heard from Mary Steve yesterday.  She went into New Orleans and our president, Carol, had posted a note on her door to call me.  One down and two more to go.  Mary Steve and her husband, Carl, have lost their business--a moving company.  All the equipment went under.  Hopefully, they can afford to get a truck and begin to work.  There is a lot of people who need to have stuff moved.

From Flora Cherry, Zonta Club of New Orleans

I left home without my address book (!) and have been unable to contact anybody.  I have just come back for an overnight visit to my house to find little damage and a gratifying list of inquiries in my mailbox.  I shall plan a return in a few weeks "to rebuild New Orleans".

From Alana Villavaso, Zonta Club of New Orleans

Hi Yall! Greetings from Georgia:

I haven't talked with anyone lately because I am in Georgia now....not for long. But when Rita came, I had to get my parents out of Lafayette. So we were on the run...again!! It was ruff. My parents didn't want to go and the relatives had killed a pig for us that day (la boucherie!). So before heading to North Louisiana to stay with a friend of a friend...we had to sit down and consume red beans and rice and all manner of cooked pork! Well, this is Louisiana for you. So off we went....to Rayville, La. where we were welcomed with open arms. But I was exhausted....with driving and worrying and trying to see to my parents and sister. So my sister Alola in Georgia said come here, leave Mom and Dad here....and get your life together. So Ill be leaving on Sunday to go back to Lafayette (return a rental car)..my car had been in the shop....oh yeah I forgot...yall don't know that a car rear ended me and then fled the scene of the accident......so....so....here I am. My Lafayette address is:

P. O. Box 3032
Lafayette, La. 70502
504-439-9028

I'm better....and some days I am not. Just surviving is a one day at a time issue. I'm still looking for work.....being in Georgia has helped in that the phone lines are not so clogged up....it was easier to get help from the Red Cross.....and the internet was not jammed. And my sister is spoiling me....it felt wonderful to have a room to myself for a few days. You can contact me through my sister here

6330 Black Oak Drive
Cumming, Ga. 30040
770-442-0200

So thank you all for your care and your concern and your love and your continuing to contact me. Please....please....continue to do so. Cause
sometimes I don't know what I need...but I know I need you.

Love, Alana

From Tanya Thomassie, President of the Zonta Club Baton Rouge
Zonta Club of Baton Rouge President Tanya Thomassie reports that "all their Zontians are accounted for, but her Mom Dorothy Thomassie recently fell.  Her shoulder is broken in 4 places and the radius above the wrist is also broken.  Dr. Messina cast the arm from fingers to above elbow.  He said he would like to treat the shoulder very conservatively, with a high sling and possibly physical therapy after healing.  If she was younger and in much better health, he said he would do a total shoulder replacement, since the bones usually die after losing that much blood.  We are in a wait and have faith that the bones will not die or that she will not be in constant pain.

Please use email tthomassie@cox.net    and/or tthomassie@usa.net since our government email was routed through New Orleans, we do not have service and do not know when we will. My cell is 225-937-5519, house 225-766-0580.  TD's (her daughter) is 225-939-5853 and home 225-654-7629. Tanya Duffy Windham Heinrich's email is the_solution@cox.net

.....In my totally tunnel vision with Mom, I completely forgot to mention I do have a bedroom and bath upstairs furnished and empty.

If any Zontian needs it........it's free, no strings, no cost.

We are planning to try and stay together as long as things remain no worse.  I am making arrangements for my Mom, so that I can continue working, but if that does not work out I will retire to care for her."

Peace and God Bless,

Tanya Thomassie

Dear Everyone,

I am writing you from Maggie Warren's email address since she has the really good email address book.  I am trying to rebuild mine with at me new address.  It is mfgardnermd@aol.com   Let me hear from you so I can rebuild it.

Please excuse all grammatical errors.  My spelling and English have disintegrated with all the stress.  Some of you will get this email more than once.  I have sent it to anyone whose name I recognize and did not look for duplication.

Now I am asking you to do something to help the Zonta Club of New Orleans members.  I am beginning to hear despair in the members I have been able to contact.  I have tried to forward the many emails that I have received because I realize it is the love and support that I am receiving from you though your many emails that is keeping me sane.

All our members need to be wrapped in this love.  Just a note saying, I am thinking of you and/or am praying for you.  It is the lost of their support system that has some of the members beginning to despair.  They need to know the system if much greater than the local club and that this support extends through out the Zonta world.

The members who email addresses I have are as follows

 1.  Rebecca Altobelli     RALT@chevrontexaco.com or RALT@chevron.com   No knowledge of where she is.  Rebecca is our treasurer.

2.  Flora Cherry   No knowledge    fcherry@bellsouth.net

 3.  Kathleen Galante  Safe  katno18@yahoo.com

 4.  Helen Smith Green  No knowledge  Her email address is the New Orleans School System.  It is not working and I am not sure when or if it will be returned.  helen_green@nops.k12.nola

 5.  Mary Steve Hodge   No knowledge   nomcinc@bellsouth.net

 6.  Catherine Kidd  No knowledge and no email address

 7.  Carol Knight, president.  Safe   carolren@earthlink.net

 8.  Amy Prudhomme  Safe  apdhomme@cox.net

 9.  Sandra Wilson  No knowledge  SLW201@aol.com

 10.  Alana Villavaso  Safe   avillava@msn.com  Not sure if this is the correct address but probably is.

 11.  Paula Daniels  Safe   mispaulay@cox.net

 12.  Mona Schindler  No knowledge   ipands@bellsouth.net or innzorb@bellsouth.net

13,  Yvette Foucha   No knowledge  I don't have her email address and it is work related.  This is our newest member.  Our AD has this address and will try to get it later.

Most of these email address were updated in July but I am operating from an old list.

I, personally ,am fine.  Staying busy writing letters.  You may contact me at my new email address.  I will try to write a letter that can be posted on the District 10 webpage.

Thank everyone that has written and called me.  The love and support is keeping me going.  I now have pictures of my house.  I have a wonderful swimming area completely surrounded the house.  The ' Great Zonta Yardsale' will not take place as all the merchandise is completely waterlogged.  The good news is that my roof is half gone and I can now claim falling water damage and not rising water damage since I found out on Monday that my flood insurance had been cancelled (very long story).  The economy of the free world is safe since I am over the depression keeping from hitting the stores.

Keep in touch and thank you very much,

 Love always,

From Aimee Bercier, Zonta Club of Lafayette  -

Mark (Aimee's brother in law) was returning from vacation in Boston before the storm hit. He was not allowed to fly out of Atlanta.  He is still there with his girlfriend. He was not able to get anything from his home or gallery.  No news yet on the condition of either.  Both are in the French Quarter.

Mary Ann Hotard Marquardt, a former NO Zontian is here (in Lafayette) with her husband, parents, brother, his wife and 4 kids. They all live in Covington.  She had a sister and husband who stayed in Covington. They had not heard from her since Sunday.  Last night they received a call from someone in BOSTON, who sent word that they were OK and there was only minor damage to her house and her parents house. We still have no word on Mary Ann's house.  Both Mary Ann and David are having trouble getting in touch with their companies. Mary Ann works for Cort Furniture Rental.  Their headquarters is in New Orleans.  They provide the furniture for all the FEMA relief efforts. So she needs to get back to work.  They finally turned off the TV.  They destruction is too hard to watch.   We are stilling waiting on word from their other friends and family members.

We are keeping everyone in our prayers.

From Elba Pereyra  District 10 Zonta International Liaison

 Dear Maggie,

I am concern about the storm and meterological problems that you have had in your district.  How is everybody there? I hope everyone is safe. It is terrible the things that are happening all over the world. Here in Uruguay, we  had a big storm in August 23, eight people were killed by trees or walls that felt down  because of the terrible winds. The government, people from ONGs and individuals are still working to restore electricity in some places where it was damaged,   buildings, houses, cutting and putting  away the trees that were in the streets. It will take months until everything gets in order.

Kind regards.

Elba.

From Karen Lestelle, Zonta Club of Lafayette -

Hi Zontians

Les' (Karen's husband) Mom and brother, Ter, made it here at my home Sunday Night.   Ter's wife is in Chicago, and others in Houston, Pensacola, & Tuscaloosa area. We have heard from most of our aunts, uncles and cousins and they are safely away from NO.

Thanks,
Karen

From Kim Hitt, Zonta Club of Lafayette -

My sister, niece and grandmother whose house is in Driftwood Park in Kenner are staying at my mom & dad's in Houma (with no electricity).  I have been trying to let my sister know that she needs to think about where she wants to go/what she wants to do next as Kenner is pretty much underwater and the city as we knew it will not be the same whenever she can return.  Fortunately Alison, my sister did grab my nieces' pictures before she left.

Watching the tv makes it all seem so surreal as Darrell said.  He leaves to go to Houma/Thibodaux area for 2 weeks for adjusting claims for Farm Bureau.  It won't be too bad for him since it is his hometown.

From Ann McNallen-Makowski, Zonta Club of West Hidalgo

Thanks Maggie for letting us know.  We have watched tv for 2 days now, and Mother & I just sit there and cry as we watch the sad events.

Please keep us informed, and let us know if there is anything we might do.

I have a cousin and his married children who live in N.O., and am told that they are staying in Lafayette.  I have another cousin in Raceland, but have no news from her as yet.  Since it is on the west side of N.O., am hoping that she and family are ok.

 Ann
